Waldorf Schools mean very well, but they are presently in a constant battle of survival. Being the largest world wide entity of private education globaly, surpassing Montessori and such educational streams, it is a burden, if not challenge, to stay true to their initial cause.

Pictures are gardening projects for middle-school students and a straw-bail house building that houses both gardening and clay-modeling/woodcarving programs in the East Bay Waldorf School. While I was there I designed a logo and started to carve a street sign with such, a start - but it has to be finished by the resident woodwork teacher John, carved meticulously and placed at the entrance. OK, more later.

can't wait to hear more about your time in Calif.... i have a particular fascination with straw bale construction. i know it's used in Calif for its un-flamable-ness (when built right) we're considering a straw bale home for our next HFH build in 2010, for other reasons, to do with economy and environmental stewardship, and insulation against the cold. there's an old (about 40 yrs old, i think) straw bale country church near here. my aunt attends it.

schools are having a rough time. i guess everyone is. but it's sad because children are our future, and they *have* to be smarter than us.

I'm interested in hearing the whole thought on this... I don't know that waldorf schools are any worse off than any other unendowed private schools of similar size...
i think the schools i attended were unendowed too.

Thanks Zee - look forward to more on this. My kids went to Waldorf from Kindergarten to Grade 9 and Anna, who is the woman in my life, is a Waldorf grad. With all its struggles, it's an amazing education I think.
My brother is a Waldorf teacher by the way (and his partner too).
