quote of my day

The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the poorest 48 nations (i.e. a quarter of the world’s countries) is less than the wealth of the world’s three richest people combined. (source here)

Assuming those 3 richest are all from the USA. I know 2 are. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, it’s not surprising you need to spend a few spend dollar to protect USA citizens. I can’t remember exactly the figure ...I think it was the USA spends more than the next 20th wealthiest nations on defence spending. Anyway it was statistically a significant amount. Well they spend a lot! On defence, but do you feel safer over there? What if you spent 30% less and the rest on helping fund education and aid to those impoverished countries? do you think you would feel any less safe ? Of course you may say that's an unrelated question, or is it ?
Best wishes

Lindsay, the US military budget is greater than all the military budgets in the world combined. And the 707 foreign bases don't bring the price tag down.

The war in Iraq itself will surpass $300 billion in a couple of months - that's a lot of beans and rice.

Of course, Canada has not come close to its goals in international development - not sure of Oz.

That's a popular fact. It's unbelievable, I know.
